  1. hmm early september… just "US TOUR cancelled" one year anniversary… but I can't remember why it was cancelled …

  2. Yeah! Thank god they postponed the tour so they could finish the album! Way to go, Cure!

  3. Monghi - June 3rd was an old date. See my update on April 11th. Universal has removed that date, and though no new date is listed, they expect to release it in Sept.

  4. i can tell you all what's going to happen next. there's going to be a press release that says the band has scrapped everything recorded up to date. they're going back to the drawing board and starting over from scratch. album will be released sometime in 2010. who wants to bet?

  5. I simply don't understand what the hold-up is. Wasn't this album completed a while ago? Over the past 4 years it's been delayed half-a-dozen times. New announcements about possible release dates make me roll my eyes at this point. Pick a date already! Remember the days when bands would release new albums almost annually? Allowing years to pass before releasing new material erodes the fan base, doesn't it? I think what bothers me the most is that The Cure have been completely silent about all of this. The multiple delays would go down easier if they would simply update the official site with ANYTHING and comment on the progress of the album. Instead we get these vague statements about new material that will surface some time in the unspecified future.

(In anticipation of your comments) Yeah, yeah, I know, The Cure don't owe me anything and I should just be happy to get new material when they eventually release it. I should be looking forward to the tour more anyway, right?

    Sheesh, I need a drink.

  6. I agree... Record released 6 months after the show I attended in BE... Well I guess at least a few new dates will be added to support this record in Europe... ...as we didnt get a proper tour for "The Cure" either (US had Curiosa, we did get the usual summer festivals (including Sean Paul as opening act, last time I saw them in Werchter)

    Sheesh, I need a drink.

  7. At this point I only care about The Cure as a live act, as a studio band they are a joke at this point. Constantly delaying albums, indecision, and the last three albums have been sub-par anyway except for a few songs.

Live. they are amazing. Personally they should not even bother with 'albums' anymore. Just release individual or groupings of new songs whenever they are completed on Itunes or something.

I will always see The Cure live when/if they come to town (which is only about every 4, 5 years anyway). But personally I won't bother buying new music from them. I think Cure fans will be lucky to see maybe 1 or 2 more studio albums after this one. If that.. RS is almost 50. I doubt he'll be writing new Cure songs in his 60's lol.

  8. Okay, it's time to storm Robert's house and hold Mary hostage until the band releases the new album! Who's with me? :P

  9. millertime, WHAT? Bloodflowers was an excellent album.

  10. I just wonder about the logic of a tour without the new material backing it up. So weird to get a new album after a tour wraps up.

    Wated promotional opportunity.
Wat on earth did they delay the tour for the first time around? I had awesome seats too :(

    ReplyDelete
  11. off-topic, so i apologize, but: bloodflowers is not an "excellent album." it's better than the self-titled 2004 album, but so is my karaoke shower routine. BF is really lazy and self-referential. it's just a carbon copy, as if the band was giving us their idea of what fans wanted, not what they as a band really wanted to do.

of course, opinion is all. and that's mine.

    ReplyDelete
  12. they realized that with all the time gone by the ticket sales are about as good as its going to get for this tour. new album or not. Now they can come out with the new album and follow it up with a festival tour to promote it. expect the same set list that they have been playing for the US tour.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Bands tour without albums to support all the time. I've never understood why people have such problems with The Cure doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think I'll just ignore these dates, does it stack up with what you have heard at all Craig?

If you ask me Sept makes no sense as a release date, unless they plan on a new tour to promote it?

Sounds like another arbitrary date plucked out of nowhere by people who dont know what they are talking about, until something offical comes out, it could be released next week for all I know and i dont care to speculate any further on it....when it comes it comes!

    ReplyDelete
  15. millertime and monkeybutt, i agree with you completely. i was aghast when i heard bloodflowers. utterly disappointed (and yeah i know it's smith's birthday and i should have some reverence but either the camouflage cargo pants go or i go. you'll get over it). and what was with the bloodflowers booklet? it was so half-assed. the whole thing. just thrown together. i, too will always see them live whenever i can but they haven't put out anything good in 12 years.

if putting out albums is this much of a struggle for them now they should'nt be doing it at all.

(of course you realize i'll take it all back if the album turns out to be genius. and there's nothing i'd love more than to be proven wrong. believe me.)

    ReplyDelete
  16. When the US tour was postponed last year, Robert came down hard on Craig for the poll he had on COF. "Why can't people just believe the tour was postponed 'cause we have to finish the album. It's been too long". Robert said something like that.
Since we have no album, that leads me to believe the tour was delayed due to poor ticket sales!

  17. Just so we are all on the same page.

The best record of all time:
    Disentegration

    Great:
    Wish

    Very Good:
    Bloodflowers
    Kiss Me
    Seventeen Seconds
    Faith
    Pornography

    Good:
    Head on the Door
    The Cure

    OK:
    The Top
    Wild Mood Swings
    Three Imaginary Boys

I figure the new album will suffer from the same problem as Wish, Kiss Me, The Cure and WMS all have which is their uneveness and lack of cohesion...all those albums could have been better by adding b-sides or removing sore thumb moments.

    ReplyDelete
  18. namepa, no offense, but the fact that you have 'the head on the door' and 'the cure' lumped into the same "GOOD" category immediately causes me to discount your same page theory. sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have to say I horrified to see HOTD only lumped in as good, it is a wonderful album, one of their absolute best! Even better than Wish in my opinion, but then its so pop so maybe its not cool to like the pop side of the Cure.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I like THOTD, as it was Inbetween Days that introduced me to The Cure back in '86.
But my top 5 Cure albums are (in order):

    Pornography
    Disintegration
    The Top
    Bloodflowers
    17 Seconds

  21. I'm so sad with the entire situation. I'm tired of getting excited only to be let down again and again. It will not be the same seeing The Cure live without hearing the album first. That is what really makes it for me. Its the way it has always happened for me. This will be my sixth time seeing them in June. I'm sure the album will be worth the wait. Robert, guys, I love you. I just wish the order of operations was different in this case.

    Albums in order of greatness:

    Disintegration
    Wish
    The Cure

    ReplyDelete
  22. I believe that Wish is their greatest album, not a single bad track, a perfect album.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think this next Cure album will be the first one I don't buy. Frankly, I am tired of giving Robert Smith my money!

And I'm not going to fall for his huckster routine this time around either -- "this new album is the best thing we've ever done! This is the best lineup we've ever had! And oh yeah -- we're breaking up after the tour so buy your tickets now!!"

We've been seeing diminishing returns from the Cure for the last 16 bloody years and it seems like the longer it takes them to make an album, the more lackluster it is!

Between 1982 and 1985, Smith put out SIX albums, between the Cure, the Glove and the Banshees (not to mention, how many B-sides??). That's like two albums a year, and absolutely some of his very best work.

And now? Four years between albums and...well, you know. Not very good albums.

The Cure are my favorite band and watching Robert -- this once wildly vibrant and exciting artist -- become more and more conservative and predictable over time just depresses me. I can't watch anymore.

I've tried to like the newer albums, I really have. But I think I'm just gonna let the next one pass quietly by.

I know this message is really negative and I apologize for that. I hate to criticize artists, because I am one myself and it sucks to have people dismiss your work.

But I don't think it's wrong to hold Robert up to a higher standard -- after all, he set that standard, not us!

In his halcyon years, Smith followed his whims and made loads of wonderfully crazy music for himself, often at the risk of alienating everyone. I miss that Robert!

Now it just seems like he's making the kind of records that we expect him to make and in the process, winds up plundering his own back catalog of ideas.

Robert, if you're reading this, I'm really sorry. You are a brilliant fucking musician and everyone loves you.

But please -- stop making records for US and get back to making records for YOU.

  26. That really sad part about this is...It doesn't even surprise me or shock me anymore. Delay after delay and empty promises. Remember the "peace stone" that was going to be happen back in September 2007? Still hasn't happened.

In the meantime, I'm just going to sit back with anticipation and wait for the "Festival" DVD that the official website tells me is going to be released on December 5, 2006.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Robert Smith is, and has always been, a perfectionist. Every record he has ever done has been "delayed" for one "reason" or another, but the real reason is that Robert doesn't work to release schedules, and he never has.

This is perhaps one of the reasons why The Cure have endured for so long. Were Robert to simply 'bang out' another album, The Cure would've fizzled out as irrelevant years ago. But Robert always puts forth his best possible effort at innovation, and jealously guards anything that isn't "ready" (in his eyes).

History has proven that The Cure's audience will wait for something worthwhile in a market dominated primarily by garbage.

    - Jordan

P.S. Keep in mind, labels also have to worry about music videos, press promotions, and other marketing tie-ins with any new album - all of which Robert is personally involved with. With touring, recording, and handling all of these affairs himself, it's no surprise to me at all (as someone in the industry) that his records take as long as they do to complete.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Just to say what I think of The Cure's albums:

    The Excellent:

    Pornography
    Faith
    17 Seconds
    The Head on the Door
    Wish
    Disintegration

    The Great:

    Kiss Me
    The Top
    Japanese Whispers

    The Good:

    Three Imaginary Boys

    The Bearable:

    Bloodflowers
    The Cure

    The God Awful, Piss Poor:

    Wild Mood Swings
    Wrong Number (the song)
    Just Say Yes (the song)

IMO, The Cure has not put out a good album since Wish. They have put out great songs though:

    Burn
    It Used to Be Me
    Trap
    Want
    Maybe Someday
    Where the Birds Always Sing
    Lost
    Labyrinth
    Anniversary
    Fake
    The Promise

I think all these are great songs, but most of the stuff they have put out has been crap. I still shudder to think why they are playing 'Wrong Number' on this tour. It wasn't a hit, it's a lousy song...truly boggling.

Robert just lost it in some ways after Wish. Maybe it was losing Porl, and Boris, who knows.

I will give them one more chance, if this album ever comes out, lol. But from the 3 songs they have been playing one is good 'Boy I never knew', and the other 2 are terrible.

So I don't have high hopes. I think this will be another album where there are a handful of 'great' songs and more crap to wade through, lol.

The Cure have not had a 'hit' in the US since 'Friday I'm in Love'. That was 16 years ago! Why Robert thinks that a 'pop' album will do well is beyond me.

Anyway I of course still think they are incredible live, and am ecstatic that Porl is back because he is one of the best musicians to ever play with them. Even though he looks like a complete freak now, lol. Robert, Simon, and Porl is a pretty tight almost original line up. That's worth money to see.

The other problem is that the record company may be rejecting what RS is trying to put out. That happened with Duran Duran - they recorded a back to the roots, indie rock album. The record company said no go, and told them to work with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. So they did and put out 'Red Carpet Massacre' which is the worst piece of garbage Duran Duran album ever.

They have lost a ton of credibility with their fans and their tour is selling crappy in the US.

Maybe the record company is trying to strong arm RS into writing more radio friendly tunes, and he is resisting.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Saying the band havent put out anything in the last 16 years is just patent nonsense and it makes me laugh just to see those words published.

I blame the internet for robbing people of the joy of finding out via an ad in a mag that a new Cure album is coming out, thats the way it used to be, not everything they do is subject to critique and speculation by people who really have no idea of the facts.

So dont buy the new album, so dont go to their live dates, whine all you like....but for gods sake do it in your bedsit and not here.

There is no such thing as healthy respect for an artist anymore, just demanding petulant whinges and attacks.....grow up

  30. Millertime - Don't listen to Alastair, continue to post whatever you like here.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I just get frustrated by the rage displayed by people is all Craig....I mean music is important yes, but the fury displayed towards the band is kind of astonishing. I guess as you get older you get to appreciate that things take so much longer is all.

For instance Porl has many children and a wife, so it's hard to be at the beck and call of a band, whilst also maintain a family life, let alone worry about what some record company twits want to see tracklisted...."we want the hits" they cry.

Thats my point...so millertime, I apologise for sounding equally enraged, but I stand by the comment that the net has ruined the joy of new music, there is no waiting, no surprises anymore....

    ReplyDelete
  32. Alastair, the "fury" you allude to is the direct result of The Cure publically announcing release dates only to repeatedly delay not only the new album, but an entire tour. Instead of repeatedly delaying things, which causes the fury you speak of, The Cure should simply update their site periodically (would one update/month be too much to ask?)and let the fans in on the album's progress. The band causes the "fury" because of all the delays and because the "official" site is 3 years out of date, which is just insulting to the rabid fan base. My God, if it wasn't for Craig, The Cure would be off everyone's radar altogether. Craig, have The Cure ever said anything about your site?

  33. some things ,whats get written here make me realy wondering.
alastair have kind of right when he said internet take some exitment away.one the other hand internet have help you to promote your petition to bring cure to nz.
so is like allways in live there some good sites some down sites.
i mean it piss me of to sometimes that any idiot can write what he want to a toppic.but i simple dont care any more realy.
i take out of the net what i need and thast it makes no sense to get pissed of with some opiniens from peopel who i not even know.so much to this .but back to the cure!

i have the feeling to that the cure more have the fokus on the us market,as on do what they can do best .
for example blodflowers could be an oustanding album.but he have some shitty mistake in this like i think.
'whatch me fall" fucking to long no real structure in this song, the album dont need this song.
he fucked up the titel track to the album complet."bloodflowers" could be a song from the same class as faith.but he have put in a guitar hippi solo in the middel, bloodflowers would be a cultsong when he would play the solo only with the sixstring.i think this was waste opertunity to make arealy big song.
if he would throu watch me fall and 39 out of this album and put two from the lost flowers in bloodflowers will be damm damm good cure album.
but it looks like he have allready at this time troubel with finding the right words to the songs.(lost flowers)
    the 2004 album
was realy an atempt to rock the us market maybe for a last time.
    and make some bugs.
only two songs i realy love on this one.thast anneversery and the promise.thast it
for the new album i dont know what i expect, its after me i want doom and gloom.but i have hear that also be 3 instrumental tracks on it.i ask me why???again not the right words ??
all what we can do is waiting,ok im kind of pissed of to that the cure not at least make alittel statment whats going on ,not talk about the website.but thast the way it is.all this speculating ,about what ,if and when.make no sense .but that i think blogs are there for.
so everyone should be free to say what they wanna.
i can only hope that the outcome of all this a fantastic cure album.
then one thing is for sure the cure is still(even with a crap album))10 times better as 90 precent of the bullshit, what runs under music this days .
    "never lost the faith"
    cheers rene

  35. Hey Alastair,
I remember my excitement when I saw an ad for "Disintegration" on a Brazilian magazine. Good old days. On the other hand, it was a fan petition on the internet that brought the band back to Brazil in '96. I guess one has to take the good with the bad.

  36. All I know is that first you've got to get mad. You've got to say, 'I'm a CURE FAN, damnit! My life has VALUE!' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and stand at your keyboards. Stand there, and stick your hands out, and type,'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!'

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jpx: "God, if it wasn't for Craig, The Cure would be off everyone's radar altogether. Craig, have The Cure ever said anything about your site?"

The Cure owe the last 10 years of their success in some part to Craig and COF. That where I've gotten all my information for tours, releases, etc.

In fact, I've never even been to the Cure's official site.

I believe Roger O'Donell even said he went to COF to find out what they were doing next, lol.

I think the problem is that Robert is a technological dinosaur, I don't think he understands the importance of the Internet. I don't even think he realizes how info is really out there, lol.

Like I said, The Cure should pay Craig a fee for services rendered over the last decade or so.

At least give him a free ticket to any show he wants, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  38. hey millertime, i'll have to disagree with you on one thing. robert knows the internet. back when the internet first started, in 1995 or 96 (ha ha), the cure were down with it. they used to talk about internet only releases back then, including downloads. so they knew the potential.

why they don't use that potential nowadays is beyond me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sr Joao, they've been playing three songs live that are supposed to be on the new album. A Boy I Never Knew, The Only One (previously titled Please Project), and Freak Show (previously known as Don't Say Anything). The lyrics to all of those are available, just not on the official site.

I don't see how anyone could badmouth Bloodflowers. The thing was good enough to get nominated for a Grammy (which it lost to a Radiohead album), so how bad could it be? Besides, the songs were awesome live.

millertime, Fake, a good song? Uh, that was probably the worst released so far from the "The Cure" sessions. Labyrinth, however, was excellent live. Oh, and have you heard the version of Just Say Yes from the Bloodflowers sessions? If not, I'd be more than happy to send it to you. It's better than the one that was released as a single. Oh, and in regard to Roger O'Donnell, he and Perry found out from COF that they were fired. Also, regarding Duran Duran, they scrapped the sessions because Andy Taylor left, again.

monkeybutt, granted, Robert did do an internet release with Five Swing Live, but I'm not too sure about his level of internet savvy. When I talked with Lol for a while after a Levinhurst show in Rochester, NY in August 2004, one of the things that he told me was that whenever he wanted to send Robert something, he had to actually mail it to him because Robert refused to upgrade from dial-up. I don't know if that's still the case, but that's how it was back then.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I remember Robert saying in a 1991 BBC interview (referring to the ever slipping release date of Wish) that he didn't think anyone was standing on a cliff waiting for a new Cure album to come out, else they would jump.

At the time he referred to bands that were really exciting such as Ride, Teenage Fanclub and the like and that the absense of a new Cure LP was hardly a major crisis. After all, it gave people a chance to go out and listen to other stuff.

Anyway, I'm sure wherever he I,s he's not standing on a cliff top getting down about the trite shite that people are posting here.

Go out and get a life. Listen to The Decemberists or Midlake or revisit your Ride and Teenage Fanclub LPs.

There's a world recession coming. There's AIDS, starvation, cancer, war, terrorism. And all you lot have to moan about is a delayed ALBUM by ONE band. God help us all.

Go out into the sunshine and be happy. Please!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. i love that. apparently now i'm not a "real fan" because i try to be an objective fan. that really takes the cake. GET REAL. i'm not going to be some rabid cure lemming who thinks whatever they do is made out of happy. they've sucked many and many a time and there would be no cure without us (and especially craig). i've been a fan for 18 years and i'll be damned if someone's going to tell me how i should feel about any of it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Perfect.murder (cool name, by the way), I've never understood your anger towards people complaining about all the delays. Why does this bother you, are you in the band? We have every right to gripe. A lot of people could give two shits about a new Cure album but there are a bunch of us that love hearing new material. We bitch and gripe and moan about this because we've been teased and teased only to be disappointed countless times. Why do you give the band carte blanche all the time? I believe that it's perfectly okay to say, "So what's the deal, Robert?" once in a while.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree with you, Sofia. Some people seem to dictate what a "real fan" is. For example, a "real fan" is not allowed to like any of the "pop" songs. Well guess what, I've seen every tour since Head on the Door and I love the "pop" stuff as much as the other stuff. Yep, that's right, I love "Taking Off" and I also think "Please Preoject" sounds terrific. I guess I'm not a real fan.

    ReplyDelete
  44. the fact that BF was nominated for a grammy is testament to how crappy it is. the grammys are a complete joke. the album sucks, in my opinion. nobody's changing my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  45. In reply to jpx(thanks for the compliment btw)...."Why do you give the band carte blanche all the time?" I don't...And this will be my final entry on the subject, but seriously how can you get so down about the(non)release of an album. It must be horrible for you to wake up everyday and get that feeling of being let down. All i'm trying to convey here is a sense of.."just let it go...que sera sera"...Granted, i did sound angry in my previous post, but how it nags reading these threads...I leave here not a bit angry ,and looking forward to an album realease..maybe someday ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Perfect.murder, I think we gripe because it's somewhat cathartic to bitch with other people who are similarly annoyed. You're right, though, whether we complain or not is not going to have any influence on the release date, but it feels good to do so. Also, I know I'll get stoned for this, but I really like the 3 new songs and I'm hoping this signifies a solid album. Even with the less popular albums we still always get a couple of classics. I still love Want, for example. My idea of torture would be to be stuck in an elevator with The 13th on an endless loop, but that's just me =)

  47. Oh, just to mention, Lol was disappointed when Robert handed the website over to the record company, and thought that he should have let fans manage it instead, like the Levinhurst site. He went on to provide the people of Chain of Flowers as a specific example. Oh, and if anyone is interested in anything else that Lol had to say that night, check out this thread...

  50. Just so anyone knows, I am not suggesting anyone isnt a true fan because of what they like etc...I for one am a huge fan of their pop stuff, but at the same time love their less pop moments.

We all have varying degrees of fondness for the band, and I hope when the new album comes out there is something for all of us to enjoy.

And I am not a lemming as has been suggested by certain persons on this site before, and I have posted many times in the past on the main site (wretched place that it is to be sure) saying "come on" give us some news....

But there is no response, I am hoping because they are fighting Geffen for the best possible album.....it seems thats what Gun's n Roses are also doing now, record comp haggling over the deal....although in their case I dont blame them....14 yrs for a new album...sheeeesh

    ReplyDelete
  51. jpx, I wouldn't have called it an interview, but you're welcome. :) It was more like "Lol and I sat on the stage for an hour after the show and had a casual conversation".

Oh, and just to make you jealous :), I almost had a chance to use Lol's phone to call my father for a ride when I got back to the Buffalo terminal, but it couldn't get a signal for some reason. I ended up having to use the promoter's phone, but just think, Robert's number was probably on Lol's phone, and I had it in my hands, literally. Even if I'd had the chance to be alone with said phone for five minutes, I wouldn't have grabbed it and accessed the contact list because as tempting as something like that might be, it would have felt wrong.

  52. The album is not out yet because it is political or even legal with the label.

Think about it. Current silence but previously Robert has gone on record moaning about not be aloud to do as he wants....

...forget the stupid conspiracies, look for the truth in what you read/don't read!!

And if you are in the BF and The Cure are crap school - I think you are wrong - but they are not perfect - because of the labels' influence on the records. Maybe Robert is putting his foot down.

And the confirmed date for the release is......

    ....Maybe Someday!

  54. The level of anger being expressed here is a little disturbing, however, on the positive it demonstrates how passionate people are about The Cure and their music, which is a testament to how great and impactful The Cure's music still is! I look forward to the new record; it will come when it comes ....

On my part, the only thing Robert could do that could get me pi$$ed is cancelling the North American Tour, as I have already bought my plane ticket to Vancouver ...

On a more entertaining note - I enjoy seeing others' Cure recording rankings, so in that vein here's mine, with favourite track in (..):

    All-time Greatest:
    Disintegration (Fascination St)

    Great:
    Wish (End)

    Excellent:
The Head on the Door (Close to Me)
    Kiss Me (The Kiss)
    17 Seconds (A Forest)
    The Cure (Lost)

    Worst:
    Bloodflowers (Maybe Someday)

With all due respect BF is boring IMO. WMS has more hi-lites: Want is classic Cure and Jupiter Crash is a great song that would have been better placed on a RS solo record.

I have to admit I listen more to live Cure (official & bootleg)than studio Cure now. They are the greatest live band, sound wise in rock history IMO, and they are WAYYY better live now than they were when they were at the top of the music heap in 1989-1992.

With regard to the bashing of Wrong Number. Check out the LIVE version done in 1998 at Bizarre Festival in Hamburg or somewhere in Germany (television broadcast is out there). That is one rocking guitar hero rendition; I love it! Now if you replace Perry (sorry dude) with Porl, then the upside is limitless!

I was wondering what others would say to the question: 5 Songs that are MUST performs for the N.American show(s) you are attending???

    Mine are:
    1.End
    2.Fascination Street
    3.At Night
    4.Prayers for Rain
    5.Primary

To conclude, having Porl back is awesome and that is what has got me really back into The Cure big time.

  55. CUREHEAD,

Hey, man, I meant no offense! Of course, you can have your say in whatever! I just happen to like "Watching Me Fall" and think that Bloodflowers in general is a very, very good album.

As for the language, I just thought it was funny. That's all. I am a Brazilian living in the USA and know the feeling of using a language that is not you own.
    Be good, man!
