"At last, 4:13 Dream was released in Japan today. In Tower Records Shinjyuku in Tokyo, many CDs were displayed along the wall with a big luminous cover artwork above. The Japanese on the display says "Everlasting Adolescence Syndrome". The album was in the listening booth, too.
Tower Records' free magazine "bounce" November issue has a 4-page retrospective article on The Cure. It features the band's history, short comments on the present & former members, and a discography including soundtracks, covers by other bands, and albums & songs Robert and other members have been involved with. I also went to HMV Shinjyuku but they didn't have any displays. It seems Tower Records Japan is the only CD shop promoting 4:13 Dream on a large scale.
I found some album reviews of 4:13 Dream in Japanese music magazines: "snoozer" December issue has one review, and "rockin' on" December issue has two. All of them are very positive. The reviewer of "snoozer" says it could have been a masterpiece if it didn't lack coherence in the musical styles, but it's still brilliant." (Thanks Junko)

ReplyDeleteThose singles in the picrutes are imported either from UK or US.
The Cure singles have never been released here in Japan.
And yes, the Japanese edition of the new album does come with the obi strip and the translation of the lyrics.;-)
Thanks for your response Junko but... We can see blue / green paper (or something else ?) on the front of the singles... Are they european or US releases with a japanese obi ??? :)

The pieces of blue / green paper are recommedations hand written by the salespersons in the shop. They don't come with the CDs.;-)

ReplyDeleteI don't post on here very often even though I visit the blog 3-4 times a week. I just had to chime in and say that I have listened to the new album only twice since it arrived from Amazon.com. My first impression was that, unfortunately, this new material desperately misses the input of Roger. I was very happy that Porl returned as he gives The Cure sound a funky swagger that they never had when it was just Perry, but not having Porl didn't leave the gaping hole that seems to exist now without Roger. I hope this one grows on me as pretty much every album since Disintegration has (even Wish had to grow on me for a few listens). Unfortunately, I found that I just wasn't as excited with 4:13 Dream as I wished I would have been. Maybe I'm just with ohell and it'll take a few more listens to really click. I hope so...
ReplyDeleteFair crack of the whip Robocop. Only 2 listens just ain't gonna cut the mustard. I've listened probably around 25 times now and it just keeps getting better and better. TRW THG & SWID are totally stellar, the rest are all equally OOTW, but TS is just cosmically insane. SSSSCCCCCCRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteI've been listening to this over the course of my work day today (first time I've had the CD at work with me) and I will say that I'm picking up on more things that I like. I already thought "The Only One" was a pretty good and "cute" lead single. "Freakshow" grew on me and "SWID" I liked almost right away. I really like "The Hungry Ghost" and "It's Over" is just off the hook. I'm starting to dig more "The Scream" and "The Real Snow White" too. "Underneath The Stars" is not at all bad, but it might take a few more listens to better appreciate it. The only track that I can still say I don't like is "The Perfect Boy". I didn't like it when the single was released and I still don't. There's something about the adolescent feel of that song that just strikes me as wrong for The Cure at this point in their career. That's just me though; I know there are a lot of fans that really like that track.
ReplyDeleteAltogether, I think I will wind up being OK with this album. If anything, it'll only whet my appetite for the (hopefully) forthcoming "dark" counterpart.
